I am thrilled to see James Stoddard's high fantasy "The False House", the sequel to his award-winning "The High House" finally in print again and also available as an ebook! :) These grand adventure stories of the House that is (and encompasses) all time and existence, and its Master who strives to retain the Balance, recall the wonder of Lord Dunsany and ER Eddison and the swashbuckling of Roger Zelazny and Michael Moorcock.I highly recommended this series.

The False House James Stoddard 9780446607018 Books Reviews
I enjoyed the False House immensely. I think the original, the High House, was slightly better, but still loved this one almost as much.
I would say this a must read for fantasy readers. Well worth the time and money investment. My only complaint is that I cannot seem to find it in hardback, like I did the first.
Excellent read. Book 1 is a five star. But this is great. Just not a 5 star.
It will test your imagination, A totally different reality is pictured. Went well with the first book in the series. Like the first book this one is complete in itself.
I devoured this book ... quickly. The prose is lyrical, magical ... but it was actually fun to read. The plot was deep. This is the best book on "Developments in Food Science" that I have ever read and the chapter on the theory of burritos and wraps was worth the entire cost of the text alone (OK, this sentence is a joke because there is an incorrect subtitle quoted on the page when I wrote this). Mr. Stoddard is an incredible writer and his sequel to "The High House" did not disappoint. If another Evenmere novel comes along I would instantly purchase it as a pre-order because the other works he has written are so very good.
Even better than the first book, by dint of a well-crafted heroine as the central protagonist. I would (hint, hint) eagerly read and buy a third book. Ideally one with Biedermeier decor.
I was afraid that False House would lose some of the magic of the High House -- one of my favorite books -- thankfully this isn't true. False House is more than a retread. It adds depth to the characters of High House and brings along its own unique plot.
Stoddard, for me, is the best modern analogue that I have discovered of writers like Chesterton and C.S. Lewis. There is weight to his fantasy, which is not something that can be said of many authors.
Stoddard is currently in progress writing a sequel, The Winking House, which I hope to see soon.
When I first read The High House, the book previous to this one, I felt like I was reading the Narnia series for the first time again. A unique setting, religious undertones (the good kind, not the in-your-face kind), and a captivating style of writing, I felt like the first book enchanted me. The plot at times bordered on getting too preachy, and at time would drag on. The highs were good, but got interrupted by the lows. Now here are the potential spoilers, and why I feel this plot point was a low The main character's wife's sister (sorry for the mouthful) had been kidnapped in the beginning and had been essentially made into the weapon of the anarchists (the main villains). When she was younger, twelve or so, she had a childhood crush on the main character's brother, who was 17. Nothing wrong with that, until when she gets found by the brother and rescued, they end up together. It felt a bit forced and out of place, not to mention that age difference felt a bit wrong. Even with that minor stumbling block, the story manages to tell a compelling tale that is worth the read. Too bad these books are hard to find at a decent price.
