Thought I should throw my two cents in since I just read some bad reviews about the book.

First of all: oh my god. I was obsessed with this book. I promised myself I'd savor it but ended up pounding through it in 3 days. After the first few chapters which were, I admit, a little slow, the book really took off and I couldn't put it down even with a gun to me head.

Second: I've described this book to a few friends of mine and they words I see were: "It's like Pride and Prejudice meets Stand and Deliver, with a steampunk mildly magic world at war as its backdrop." I loved the intertwining stories, each with such varied narrators, and each character so lovingly rendered they felt living and breathing.

The romance between Royston and Hal was a bit of a tease, but it was developed with such real emotion and genuine love between the two characters that I could hardly be too disappointed.

There've been a lot of complaints about Rook. Yes, he is insufferable, but he has truly redeemable qualities, like loyalty and bravery and an unconditional love for his dragon. And what poor soul with an upbringing like he had ~wouldn't~ turn out surly and unrefined. That's what Thom's for, after all. Rehabilitating him. And he is redeemed in the end. Havemercy doesn't tell the whole of his character arc, just the beginning, when we see him as a total brat who by the end has started to change into an actual human with feelings. If he'd done a complete 180 everyone would say it was unrealistic. So I'm very happy with how he turned out and excited to see him develop further in his next installment.

I've already pounded my way through the second book over the course of 24 hours and am on my way to the third. This book series is AMAZING. Not just for its storytelling and world building but also its adult handling of gay themes and non-traditional masculinity. Okay, sure, there weren't that many female characters, but they're in the military in a place and time when women aren't in the military - it stands to reason. There are more women in the second book so don't worry.

I give this book two full thumbs up and a hearty ten out of ten. I shall now continue to devour the next two books.

Havemercy Jaida Jones Danielle Bennett 9780553806960 Books Reviews

I truly enjoyed this book and immediately dove into the next upon completion.
My only issue was trying to care about Rook. Or even believe that he was anything more than a cruel brutish moron, despite the authors' clear attempts to have one ensured of his intelligence. Basically, I just wanted him to fall off his dragon.
Thom was a thumb of a human, but not unbearable.
Royston and Hal gave me life and, frankly, are my number one reason for recommending this book.
Over all, this was a fantastic read and had me entrapped, sneaking it out to read as much as I could at any moment I could. I am definitely planning on giving it as gifts as soon as possible!
Havemercy starts a little on the slow side as you jump between the four characters who narrate the tale. However, once the momentum builds this becomes a complete page turner. It's hard to categorize the book. Fantasy? Yes. Romance? Well, sometimes. Humor? It's laugh out loud funny at times. Action? Entirely, but you'll wish it had more by the time you weather your way through the final portion of the story.

The dragons you'll encounter are unlike the usual dragon-fantasy-fare. But the wildest creatures in the book are by far the Airmen who man them.

While the plot contains male/male romance, it comes across very naturally. It's sweet and well-crafted and shouldn't limit this story from being shared with a broad audience.

Ms. Jones and Ms. Bennett have crafted an amazing first novel. The dialogue is fresh, funny, and very witty. You'll find that each of the four main voices comes across unique--to the extent that it's amazing that the characters sprung forth from two minds and not four. (Or more.)

At the story's end, you'll be craving more--especially since a handful of very minor characters are absolutely begging to have their stories told.
I just finished Havemercy and am eager to get into the next book, Shadow Magic. The narrative is excellent and professional. I fully enjoyed the way the authors bounced between the different characters. It was a great way to see inside the minds of the different characters and also see how they viewed each other.

The story, plots and overall setting may not be the most original but it was well thought out and enjoyable. I enjoyed the partial steampunk atmosphere involved with the Dragons from Havemercy. It was nice because it was still fantasy overall and the technology was not overdone. Nor was it the focus of either book. In general the focus is on the characters first and foremost.

Perhaps a bit more lore on the technology and magic would be nice, since it was not fully explained. Then again there wasn't as much need to. Plus it may be explored in more detail in the next book.

The four main characters were teamed up, Thom and Rook then Hal and Royston. I do not want to mention any plots of such but will just say they were all well developed even if they fit the basic stereotypes of Scholar, Army Boy, Country Lad and City Man. I also liked the added gay friendly touches included in the story.

Overall a great book!
