My 8th grader had to read this book over the summer. Due to the author using poetry to tell the story, it was a little hard for him to understand all the important details. I read it so I could help him. I enjoyed the story as well as the method used by the author. So glad I decided to read it!

Lovely little story. I loved the verse style.
Interesting style of delivering the story through poetry. The story is engaging and easy to read. Reluctant middle schoolers voice, I think.
My son and I read this book together and we both didn't want to stop reading. The story is unique, interesting and pulls at the heart strings. Highly recommended.

Amazing read. Great book to introduce students to prose. So many topics you could teach through this book- racism, forgiveness, acceptance, stereotypes....
The book reminds us that there is much potential to be explored in the verse novel. In this instance, the style serves the subject. I can easily imagine the young English language learner tripping along in free verse, especially since he has such a poignant story to convey. Burg's telling makes us mindful that pain spared no one in the American-Vietnamese conflict, whether generations or continents away, and somehow true reconciliation demands an empathy commensurate to the brokenness endured by all. A hallmark of intergenerational adolescent fiction that invites the reader to ponder the aesthetic possibilities of the novel in verse.
This book gave amazing insight into the world of an adopted child, one who came from trauma and grieves the past. A must read for all adoptive families
