Character development was ok. Storyline was confusing at times and lacking in detail that would have made it a more enjoyable read. The wrap up was rushed and gave the impression the author was tired of the story and just wanted to end it. Basic editing was missing - grammar and spelling issues made it difficult to follow. Wonder why character names weren't spelled consistently throughout. Wish my 10th grade English teacher had given it the once-over before it was published.Product details

A genre book in which the characters grow beyond their tropes and types is rare, but that is something Brian Meeks has definitely achieved here. Even minor characters change and develop, something I don't often see. They have a richness and a depth that's unusual, as well, giving a sense that they have backstories, interests, relationships and motivations outside the story itself. It's a relatively large cast, but it's easy to keep track of who everyone is, because they all have their individuality.
Dialogue, as in the first book, is not a strong point. The precise Professor says "whacha" instead of "what are you", the grumpy German refers to "guys". It's a testament to the strength of the characterization that this doesn't completely break the book. The author may fix this in future, but dialogue that sounds natural and fits each character is definitely an area where his writing needs work.
I found the plot well structured and well paced. The detective gets a couple of lucky breaks, but he still has to apply his intelligence to capitalize on them. The sting at the end is beautifully set up.
I still didn't get a strong 50s vibe, somehow. Maybe more description of clothing and hairstyles would have helped.
Despite my complaints, it's rare enough to find a book with such good characters that I'll definitely be buying the third volume (coming soon). And I think the author needs to raise his prices, though fixing up the editing issues and improving the covers probably comes first. This is definitely worth more than 99c.
I decided to read this novel because somewhere I read that it was a time travel story. Well, they were wrong. Ok, it has maybe five sentences involving a time travel closet what delivers newspapers from the future to help the main character solve the mystery, but that's it. So as a time travel story it's a dud. I'm not sure why it was even in the story as the author could easily have chosen some other way to provide the clues. As a murder mystery it was pretty good even if it had a slow start. Although the murder to be solved takes place at the very beginning of the story, the first third of the book introduces the characters, the romantic interest, and has lots of description to set the noir detective story atmosphere. It's not until half way into the book that things get interesting and the pace picks up with the introduction of an ancient artifact, the antikytherea mechanism. This is a real historical treasure discovered around 1900. The book adds some fictional information about it and an exciting back story. The plot then continues unfolding at a quick pace until the murder is solved at the very end of the book. I had difficulty following a few of the details of the final scene which transpired extremely quickly. The ending was good and had some suspense. I liked the middle part of the story the most. The characters were well developed, believable, and entertaining.
Not bad at all. I like a whodunit where you have the facts to solve the mystery as the story evolves but can't solve it. This isn't one of those. Some of the facts are revealed only in hindsight, which is kind of unfair. I knew who the Falcon mid-way through. Hard to believe Henry's relationship with the Falcon; can't say any more without spoiling.
I liked Henry and the other characters, though; all were pretty well developed. The magic closet that is so important to the story (and could have been more important) is a really minor story element, even though such a holy-shoot magic device is incredibly important. The anti-kythera is a real device, and a working one (without magic powers, though) actually has been built. I cared about the device and the characters, and the story is very competently developed.
I give it about 4.3 stars. As an aside, why don't these rating systems allow entry of a number instead of just choosing a number of stars? Wouldn't that be wonderful?
Henry Wood Time and Again is the second installment in the Henry Wood Detective Series. Author Brian Meeks has hit another one out of the ballpark with this fun and fascinating private eye novel. Set in the middle of last century, the book has all the hallmarks of a film noire detective story, without being trite or indulging in cliché. Meeks creates likeable characters, even those who you love to hate, and sets them in an exquisitely researched world of art dealers, art thieves, street hoodlums, high society, priests, cops, and mysterious secret societies.
Readers of the first Henry Wood story will welcome back the appearance of the "closet," although it plays a background role through much of this book. While some reviewers lament the closet as a deus ex machina, Meeks provides a playful and powerful counterpoint by centering this mystery around an actual god-machine, an ancient artifact known as the Eye of God, among other names.
Brian Meeks is an author to add to your favorites list. From a purely selfish perspective, I hope that everyone reading this review will buy all of his books, so that he will be sure to keep writing! I only have one more Henry Woods story unread, and I hope that future books in this series are in the works. Do yourself (and the rest of us Henry Woods fans) a favor buy the whole set and start reading!
