I don't think the writing style is great here, but it is definitely suspenseful and filled with "what happens next?" I think my reason for buzzing through this is I could not believe this main character was really that stupid. I thought maybe she was supposed to be, but now that I'm done, I'm a bit disappointed. I think if she was supposed to be this dumb, that should have become clear. Not to give away the ending but - how does she live with herself? These lingering thoughts and the uneven writing keeps me from giving it five stars. Obviously, this author knows a lot in several areas that are really well written, and less in the areas that aren't.

Fatal Gift edition by Michael Frase Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
In Frase’s slow-burn of a thriller, a young woman named Kasey Riteman witnesses a crime that no one was ever supposed to see. As Kasey struggles to report the crime without putting herself in danger, she finds herself tangled in a web that stretches from the criminal underground of Chicago to the corrupt political backrooms of Nashville. Despite the danger, Kasey finds herself increasingly drawn into the spotlight for a chance for a second lease on life.
This is not your average quick beach-read. The beginning is fairly slow for a thriller; Frase focuses on developing characters and building tension before diving into the action. The middle section of the novel is more a mystery/police-procedural than a straight thriller. There’s certain subtle attention-to-detail that runs throughout the novel. Frase’s author bio credits him as advisor to multiple branches of law enforcement, and that experience shows in his portrayal of the investigation and the police department as a whole. Frase is also skilled at crafting tension. It doesn’t take long for the reader to feel the same creeping sense of fear that Kasey does. By the halfway mark, I found it hard to read without feeling the urge to get up and make sure my door and windows were locked. There are excellent plot twists, including an unexpected betrayal that I won’t spoil.
That same dedication to detail goes into the characters as well. (A quick warning there are a lot of threads for the reader to keep up with in the novel.) Frase’s villains are incredibly nefarious; one or two are downright frightening. He has a real gift for portraying corrupt, spineless politicians. The star, Kasey, is a complex heroine who tries to balance fighting for justice with looking out for herself. Her backstory is a tad tragic; she’d be sympathetic enough without it. She’s at turns tough, witty, and painfully vulnerable. I was rooting for her to succeed from chapter one. Other favorites include Chief Jordan Taylor, reporter Brandie, and Detective Ortega (honorable mention goes the Sam the cat).
My main critique is that novel feels overlong at times; things can move a little slowly. Overall, however, this is a nail-biting mystery-thriller that will keep the reader thinking. Pack it in your bag for your next vacation; you won’t be disappointed.
Trouble arrived in threes for young Kasey Reitman. She was sexually harassed by her boss. She lost her job. Then her car broke down on a country road, where she witnessed a vicious murder. To bring the killer to justice without exposing herself, Kasey disguised herself as a psychic, and led the police to the scene of the crime. But when media attention swarmed around her, there was nowhere to hide.
I must say if I could give this more than 5/5 stars I would!! What an absolutely fantastic read!! Thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. An absolute rollercoaster of emotions. I will be honest and was going to read this at a later date as it is one of the longest books on my list to read. However, it was chosen to be read next by a friend and I am glad it was!! very strong characters and excellent descriptions where you really can feel as if you are in the story. I was on the edge of my chair every time I picked it up to read, was as much as possible as I hated putting it down. Highly recommend to anyone really but especially to fans of crime, murder mystery and anyone who enjoys a book full of twists and turns. A massive well done to the author and I hope to see more of your work! xx
Loved it and can't wait for the sequel to come out! It was such a page turner that I never wanted to put it down!
The best mystery novel I have ever read. It's no wonder Michael is on the NYT Best Sellers List. This book is hard to put down.

I read this book many years ago and it was so good I passed it around to all my friends and family. I didn't get the book back so I looked on for a copy. There was no version available so I bought the paperback so I can read it again. It really is a great read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes suspense. I hope I still think it's as good as I did then but I know that everyone else who read it felt the same way I did and couldn't put it down. So enjoy readers. You won't be disappointed.
This is without a doubt one of the best books I've read in ages, and I read a lot. Love the characters, the storyline and the flow of the story. Mr. Fraser is better than Patterson, in my opinion. I recommend this to everyone !!!
Compelling. Fast paced stand alone that is easy to follow.
Interesting storyline with several twists throughout. No graphic violence or sex scenes. The procedures, actions and reactions are realistic.
Believable characters with distinct personalities. Informative and thought-provoking dialogue.
Spoiler depressing ending.
No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.
